Ancient Trireme Olympias (reconstruction)

Post by Ayanamikun »

Olympias is a reconstruction of an ancient Athenian trireme, and among the most extensive projects of reconstructive experimental archaeology ever undertaken. She was built between 1985-1987, with the cooperation of an international team of experts, the British "Trireme Trust" provided the plans, specialized wood was imported from the United States, and she was built in Greece with funds from the Hellenic Navy.
Her displacement is 70 tons, 36.9 m x 5.5 m, crew required : 170 +

An important catalyst for the project was the excavation of the Athenian Arsenals in Piraeus that housed the ships, which gave precise dimensions to the plans of the ship. She spent 10 years running tests for various archaeological inquires.

She was restored in the summer of 2016 and sails regularly with volunteers. She is the only commissioned oared ship in the world.

Her usual mooring place is the Naval Tradition Park in Athens
