Reproduction Dutch Yacht the "Onrust"
Most people haven't heard of the little historical jem that hides along the shores of Hudson River but the "Onrust" is just waiting to be explored! The vessel being launched in 2009 by all volunteer, not for profit organization named "The Onrust Project", designed to teach the masses about Adriean Block who explored the Hudson River and most of the New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island shore line and River ways from 1613-16 in search of fur pelts, land, and trade. Captain Block built the "Onrust" in the winter of 1614 after his first ship, the Tyger, burned to the waterline. Block's major contribution to nautical history was the charting of passage Helle Gadt or otherwise known as Hell's Gate in NY and charting the Connecticut River all the way up to modern day Hartford, CT. Today the reproduction vessel is a teaching platform serving the community near Kingston,NY and offering day sails on the Connecticut River in cooperation with the Connecticut River Museum in Essex,CT. Be sure to check them out or volunteer on the crew!

She's a beauty alright!
Just finished a book by Russel Shorto, called 'The Island at the Center of the World", the epic story of the Dutch colony called New Netherland.
Captain Block's (after whom Block Island is named) journeys with 'Onrust' are described in there as well.
