USS Charette (DD-581) commissioned

On 18 May 1943 Fletcher-class destroyer USS Charette (DD-581) was commissioned, with Commander E. S. Karpe in command.
After transfer to Greece in 1959 as "Velos' (D16), she became a museum ship near Athens in 1994.  (temporarily in Thessaloniki)

USS McAnn laid down

82 years ago today, on 17 May 1943, Cannon-class destroyer escort, USS McAnn (DE-179) was laid down at Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newark, New Jersey.
She was first loaned, and on 30 June 1953 transferred to the Brazilian Navy as 'Bauru (Be-4)'.
