Tang decommissioned

46 years ago today, on 8 February 1980, the lead ship of the Tang-class submarines, USS Tang (SS-563) was decommissioned and leased to Turkey as TCG Pirireis (S343), now a museum ship in Izmir, Turkey.

Jeremiah O'Brien taken out of service

80 years ago today, on 7 February 1946, the Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien was taken out of service. She was mothballed and remained in the National Defense Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay for 33 years, after which an all-volunteer group, the National Liberty Ship Memorial (NLSM), acquired Jeremiah O'Brien in 1979 for restoration.

Diamantina discovers deepest part of Indian Ocean

66 years ago today, on 7 February 1960, River-class Frigate HMAS Diamantina K377 discovered the deepest known part of the Indian Ocean, now named Diamantina Deep which is 8,047 m (26,401 ft) deep.
