N.R.P. "Barracuda" is the second submarine of the "Albacora" class, which was ordered in 1964 from the French shipyard "Ateliers Dubigeon-Normandie" in Nantes.
The keel was laid on October 19, 1965, it was launched on April 24, 1967, and also carried out its first dive in St. Nazaire on April 23, 1968. It was commissioned on October 9, 1968.. On October 13th of the same year, it entered the Tagus River for the first time, heading to its armament port, the Lisbon Naval Base.

During its operational life the N.R.P. "Barracuda" carried out numerous missions, including its own training, training of students at the Submarine School and national and international exercises, namely CONTEX, SWORDFISH, TAPON, JMC and collaborations with the British Royal Navy's operational training organization (FOST).

Of the various missions carried out, the first sinking carried out by a Portuguese submarine on a surface ship, the M/V "Bandim", which occurred on December 15, 1982, stands out, as this ship at the time constituted a danger to navigation. .

Also noteworthy are the missions to safeguard the national maritime space, participation in national and NATO exercises; operation "SHARP-GUARD", on the occasion of the embargo carried out by NATO forces on the countries of the former Yugoslavia, in national representation actions, as well as in special missions framed within a new strategic concept.

Also noteworthy is the "Endurance" operation carried out in 1997, by the NRP BARRACUDA, which remained at sea carrying out exercises for 31 days.

Until December 2001 the N.R.P. Barracuda completed a total of 52,622 hours of navigation, of which 35,795 hours were submerged, having covered 263,358 nautical miles (the equivalent of anout 12 circumnavigations of the Earth).

She was officially opened as a museum ship on May 9 2024 by Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo and the Mayor of Almada.
